Senior Gardening Club

The Senior Gardening Club brings together older adults who share a passion for plants and the outdoors. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just beginning to develop your green thumb, our club offers a welcoming environment to learn, share, and grow together.

Why Gardening is Perfect for Seniors

Gardening offers numerous benefits specifically for older adults:

  • Physical Exercise: Gentle, low-impact activity that improves strength and flexibility
  • Cognitive Stimulation: Planning, problem-solving, and learning new skills
  • Emotional Well-being: Connection with nature reduces stress and anxiety
  • Social Interaction: Building friendships through shared interests
  • Sense of Purpose: Watching your plants grow provides fulfillment and satisfaction

Club Activities

Our gardening club meets twice a week at the Community Center’s specially designed accessible garden. The garden features raised beds at various heights to accommodate different mobility needs.

Activities include:

  • Planting seasonal vegetables, herbs, and flowers
  • Educational workshops on gardening techniques
  • Plant exchanges and seed sharing
  • Collaborative community garden projects
  • Seasonal harvest celebrations
  • Field trips to local botanical gardens and nurseries

Accessible Gardening

We’ve designed our garden space to be accessible for all seniors:

  • Raised garden beds at wheelchair-accessible heights
  • Wide, paved paths between garden areas
  • Ergonomic gardening tools available for use
  • Seating areas throughout the garden for rest breaks
  • Shaded areas for protection from the sun

When and Where

  • Regular Meetings: Tuesdays and Fridays, 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM
  • Location: Community Center Garden (east side of the building)
  • Indoor Option: Activities move to the Craft Room during inclement weather

“The gardening club gave me a reason to get out of the house after my husband passed. Now I have a beautiful patio garden and a wonderful group of friends.” - Eleanor, 83
